讲座内容:
Probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) has been extensively investigated at the point-to-point transmission level, enabling flexible rate adaptation and improved spectral efficiency (SE) under varying signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. Wide-rate tunability across diverse transmission distances has also been experimentally demonstrated. At the network scale, increasing traffic demand is driving both Flex-Grid operation and spatial division multiplexing (SDM), with multicore fiber (MCF) emerging as a particularly promising solution. Therefore, translating PCS gains into such network architectures requires physically consistent spectral efficiency modeling.
Optical networking studies often rely on simplified reach abstractions, which may obscure the impact of nonlinear interference or inter-core crosstalk. In this work, we bridge PCS from point-to-point transmission to network design through a validated SE framework that consistently incorporates amplified spontaneous emission, nonlinear interference, and inter-core crosstalk under realistic backbone loading conditions. We show that, when evaluated under such physically grounded assumptions, PCS yields substantial increases in offered traffic load and corresponding reductions in transceiver count and energy consumption.
* During the talk we will present the Barcelona School of Telecommunications Engineering at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
主讲人简介:

Joan M. Gené received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Telecommunications Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in February 2001 and February 2005, respectively.
Dr. Gené is currently an Associate Professor at the Barcelona School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSETB), UPC, where he has been Vice-Dean for International Relations since January 2025. He is a member of the Department of Signal Theory and Communications. His research has focused on advanced modulation formats for fiber-optic communications. He carried out two postdoctoral research stays at Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, NJ, USA (September 2005–August 2006 and August 2018–July 2019), then part of Lucent Technologies during his first stay and Nokia during his second. He also conducted a third postdoctoral research stay at ICFO – Institut de Ciències Fotòniques in Castelldefels, Barcelona, from January 2022 to December 2023.
His current research interests include advanced transmission schemes for high-capacity fiber-optic networks, spatial-division multiplexing (SDM) technologies, and quantum communications.
